Making the Most of Your October

Before you head out, here are a few general tips for navigating the Peninsula in the fall:

  • Dress in Layers: The “Delmarva Shift” is real. It can be 40 degrees at 8 AM and 70 by noon. A flannel over a tee is the unofficial uniform of the season.
  • Support Local: When you’re at these festivals, look for the vendors selling local honey, jams, and handmade crafts. It’s the best way to keep our small-town economy thriving.
  • Stay Hydrated: Between the salty air and the walking, it’s easy to forget to drink water. I always keep a reusable insulated flask in my car to keep tea hot or water cold throughout the day.
  • Gear Up: If you’re heading to the nature reserves or the marshes, a good pair of waterproof boots is a lifesaver. If you’re birding, I’ve found that Nikon Monarch binoculars are a game-changer for spotting fall migrations.
